Former president Jimmy Carter, in Guyana to monitor elections there, left a day before the voting because he was unwell, his foundation said.

Carter, 90, was in the South American nation with other members of the Carter Center to observe the polling scheduled for Monday, May 11.

He left Guyana around noon on Sunday with an unspecified ailment, according to iNews Guyana.

"President Carter was not feeling well and has departed Guyana to return to Atlanta today," The foundation said in a press release. "The Carter Center election observation mission in Guyana is continuing its work and will keep him informed of developments"

The Carter Center has observed 99 elections in 38 countries, according to its website.
