A tour bus carrying a women’s college lacrosse team careened off a Pennsylvania freeway on Saturday, killing two people, including the team’s pregnant head coach.
The bus was carrying 23 lacrosse players and three coaches from Seton Hill University, Pennsylvania Turnpike spokeswoman Renee Colborn told the Associated Press.
The two deceased victims were identified as the bus’s driver, Anthony Gueaetta, 61, and Kristina Quigley, 30, according to the Cumberland County Department of Public Safety.
“At this time, Seton Hill University has learned that the University’s head women’s lacrosse coach, Kristina Quigley, died of injuries sustained in the crash,” Seton Hill University said in a statement Saturday afternoon. “Quigley was pregnant, and her unborn baby boy died as a result of the crash as well. Quigley is survived by her husband, Glenn Quigley and young son, Gavin.”
The coach had just begun her second season coaching the women’s team, according to the statement.
The team from the Catholic school in Greensburg, Pennsylvania was on its way to a game when it went off the freeway at about 9 a.m. and crashed into a tree. Photos showed one side of the vehicle seemingly torn off, though it was unclear whether the damage was caused by the impact or rescue workers.
Three seriously injured people were transported to the Hershey Medical Center, Kary Coleman, a spokesperson for Seton Hill University, said in a statement.
The team was headed for a game against Millersville University. The school’s athletics department carried a notice on its website that the Saturday home game against Seton Hill University had been canceled.
“Today's women's lacrosse game vs. Seton Hill has been canceled. Seton Hill was involved in a traffic accident en route to the game. We hope the best for all involved,” Millersville University Athletics said in a post on its Facebook page.
The Department of Environmental Protection was on the scene to deal with large amounts of spilled diesel fuel, WGAL reported.
Mlaker Transportation, which operated the bus involved in the accident, extended its “sorrow and sympathy” to the victims of the accident in a statement on Saturday.
