Two people died and nearly two dozen were hurt when a Coach bus hit two vehicles and flipped over on the Long Island Expressway overnight, striking two oncoming vehicles on the other side of the highway, authorities say.
Fire officials say 20 people were hurt in the crash, which happened just before midnight near Exit 16 at Greenpoint Avenue. Three of the victims had critical injuries, two had serious injuries and 15 more had minor injuries, officials say. Nearly 100 emergency personnel responded to the scene.
The two people who died were a bus driver and a bus passenger. It’s not clear how many people were on the bus at the time of the accident, nor was it known where the bus was headed. Traffic was a disaster.
People were seen getting out of their cars and walking on the LIE as they tried to assess the situation.
Extensive traffic impacts were expected throughout the morning.
The investigation is ongoing.
