A 12-year-old boy was arrested last week and accused of multiple attempted armed carjackings in the Washington, D.C., area, police said.
Washington police said the boy tried to carjack three vehicles and successfully carjacked a fourth within an hour in Northeast Washington on Thursday.
Police said the incidents began around 6:30 p.m. when two people, one of them brandishing a handgun, approached a vehicle and told the driver to get out.
"The victim did not comply and fled the scene," police said in a statement.
About 45 minutes later, the carjackers approached a man in a second car. One of the people displaying a handgun and demanded that he get out. He refused and left the scene.
Then, five minutes later, at 7:20 p.m., the pair made a third attempt and told a person to hand over the keys to the car, but they ran away.
In the fourth incident, the carjackers approached a woman in her car. One of them, who had a handgun, demanded that she get out. She complied, and they drove off in her car.
"One of the suspects was apprehended" and the "victim's vehicle was recovered" shortly afterward, police said. A 12-year-old boy from Southeast Washington was arrested the same day and charged. Officials said they are still searching for the other person, who was recorded on a surveillance camera.
Police offered a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and to convictions.
