One person was killed Tuesday and others were injured when a driver accused in a carjacking crashed after a pursuit by officers, police said.

The carjacking happened around 10 a.m., and a police chase started after the stolen city-owned truck was spotted by authorities, Officer Robert Rueca, a San Francisco police spokesperson, told reporters.

A 58-year-old man died and three victims had injuries that were described as not life-threatening, police said in an update Wednesday.

The suspect, Carlo Watson, 57, was booked on charges of carjacking, murder, vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence, evading a police officer causing serious bodily injury or death, and driving without a license, police said Wednesday.

The city agency to which the city truck belonged, has not been released by police. Video from NBC Bay Area showed a smashed white truck with a utility-style yellow light on top still at the scene.

A bus stop was struck and some of the injured were pedestrians, Rueca said.

No officers or anyone else was reported hurt, Rueca said. The suspect was initially taken to a hospital Tuesday.

“We know that during the carjacking a physical struggle did occur, and this suspect fled from that scene of the carjacking," Rueca said Tuesday.

The city worker was working at the time of the carjacking.

Police said that the incident remained under investigation Wednesday. Whether a weapon was used has not been disclosed.

Watson remained jailed Wednesday night, according to online jail records. A court case did not appear to be in online records, and it was not clear if he had an attorney who could speak on his behalf.

The San Francisco Police Department has a pursuit policy that allows chases in violent crimes, and carjacking is a violent crime, Rueca said.

At least one SUV was struck in the crash, but police did not say how many of the injured were in vehicles and how many were pedestrians.
