Authorities are searching for the gunman who opened fire Wednesday on a San Francisco train, killing one person and injuring another, officials said.
"Terrible news this morning: on the MUNI between Forest Hill and Castro station, we have been informed by SFPD that a shooting occurred inside the train," Myrna Melgar, a member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, wrote on Twitter.
MUNI is San Francisco’s network of fuel-efficient buses, light rail trains, historic streetcars and iconic cable cars.
"Two victims were shot. One is deceased and the second victim in hospital. Perpetrator ran out of the train at Castro station," Melgar said in the post.
"We have too many guns out there. Too, too many," she added.
The shooting occurred shortly before 10 a.m., San Francisco police said in a statement.
Officers responded to the Forest Hill Station and learned the shooting occurred on a train headed toward the Castro Station.
Officers found two victims. The surviving victim was taken to the Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center with injuries that were not considered life-threatening, police said.
The second shooting victim died at the scene, despite fire personnel’s lifesaving measures, police said.
The shooting did "not appear to be related to Pride festivities or targeting the LGBTQ community," police said.
The shooter, police said, wore dark clothing with a hooded jacket.
The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency announced that trains between the West Portal and Castro stations were stopped in both directions "due to ongoing police activity."
The agency tweeted Wednesday that normal operations at the Castro Station were resuming but that riders should expect residual delays.
San Francisco police added that they were investigating a shooting in the area of Market and Castro.
