One person was dead and two were rescued after a Navy plane crashed off Virginia on Wednesday, officials said.

The E-2D Hawkeye went down around 7:30 p.m. between two islands on the Delmarva Peninsula, Naval Air Force Atlantic said in a statement.

The aircraft, based at Naval Station Norfolk and assigned to an East Coast Airborne Command and Control Squadron, was on a routine exercise before the crash, a Navy spokesman told NBC affiliate WAVY of Norfolk.

Two crew members rescued by the Coast Guard were being treated for non-life-threatening injuries, the statement said.

A third person who was not identified was found dead in the plane, the statement said.

It wasn't immediately clear what caused the crash.
