Mountains of used tires lay in a landfill in Sesena Nuevo, near Madrid, on Wednesday. Currently storing over 75,000 tons of tires, the dump site is a major environmental problem and was declared illegal in 2003. The company which ran it left the area after severe fines were issued, leaving regional governments to process the tires in order to clear the area within approximately four years. Most of the material will be recycled for building materials, surfacing for roads, sports tracks and children's playgrounds.
