Fidel Castro, Cuba's former president and revolutionary leader, made a rare public appearance to attend the inauguration of an art gallery on Wednesday in Havana.

Castro, 87, who ceded power to his brother Raul Castro in 2008 after falling ill in 2006, was last seen in public in April 2013 at the inauguration of a Havana school. The gallery Castro visited is run by Cuban artist Alexis Leyva, aka Kcho.

A witness, who asked not to be identified, told Reuters a stooped Castro arrived in the evening and entered the building with the help of aides and a cane, after briefly talking with well wishers in the Playa municipality of Havana.

Castro ran Cuba for 48 years before ceding power.

He receives guests regularly at his private residence, but photos are rarely released.
