Presidential candidate Ted Cruz may be working on his outreach to the Latino community by speaking at a commencement in the U.S. border town of Laredo, Texas.
According to a report in the Texas A&M International University newspaper, Cruz's campaign team offered for the GOP senator to speak at the school's commencement. A special night-time ceremony may have to be arranged to accommodate him. An announcement should be made April 6.
Cruz did not attend the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce's legislative summit in Washington last week, leading Javier Palomarez, the chamber's president and CEO, to say that he hoped Cruz "was not backing away from the Hispanic community to get through the primary."
Laredo is a city of nearly 250,000 and is about 95 percent Latino. As a border city, the community is very dependent on international commerce and accustomed to cross border relationships. Last summer, Cruz drew criticism for chastising President Barack Obama for not visiting the border when tens of thousands of unaccompanied children and migrant families were showing up at the border because he had not been at that time either.
