Juanes brought Spanish back to the Grammys this year.
The Colombian singer - who was introduced by "Jane the Virgin" actress and Golden Globe winner Gina Rodriguez - perfomed his new single, “Juntos,” or “Together.” The song, co-written and produced by the singer and Dominican legend Juan Luis Guerra, is set to appear in the upcoming Disney feature film, “McFarland, USA.”
The feature film follows a group of young Latin-American immigrants and their coach, starred by Kevin Costner, through their journey to becoming cross-country championship contenders.
Juanes tweeted "Llegó la hora," ("the time has come") right before his performance. He also retweeted a tweet from an interview with Ryan Seacrest, in which he said his performance "was a great way to give dignity to my culture."
Notable Latino musicians and stars at the Grammys included Colombian singer Carlos Vives, Spanish-Dominican artist Jhene Aiko and Juanes’ wife and Colombian actress Karen Martinez. Previous Grammy winner Enrique Iglesias presented the Song of the Year Award to Sam Smith, who won for "Stay With Me." Smith also won for Record of the Year.
Vives won Best Tropical Latin Album for his "Mas Corazon Profundo" album.
Juanes was nominated for Best Latin Pop Album, but it was Panamanian Ruben Blades who took the Grammy home for his “Tangos” album. Puerto Rico's Calle 13 won Best Latin Rock, Urban or Alternative Album of the year with “Multirival.”
Five-time Grammy award winner "Flaco" Jiménez won a Lifetime Achievement Award. As Billboard noted, Jiménez was recognized for bringing the Tex-Mex accordion to rock music, performing with Bob Dylan and The Rolling Stones.
The Grammys also recognized some music legends who died this past year, including Argentinian rocker Gustavo Cerati and Spanish flamenco and guitar legend Paco de Lucía.
