2. Back to Work for Kentucky Clerk Opposed to Gay Marriage
Kim Davis, who was jailed for refusing to issue same-sex marriage licenses, goes back to work Monday. In her absence, deputies have been issuing the licenses. It’s not clear whether Davis will stop them. Read more in NEWS.
3. Manhunt for Kentucky Trooper’s Killer
A 31-year-old state trooper was shot to death after a driver fled a traffic stop late Sunday night. Authorities have identified a suspect and say he should be considered armed and dangerous. People are being urged to lock their doors. Read more in NEWS.
4. Prison Worker Who Helped Escapees: I’m Not a Monster
Joyce Mitchell, who helped the inmates who broke out of a high-security New York prison in June, tells NBC’s Matt Lauer in an exclusive interview: “I’m just somebody that got caught up in something that she couldn’t get out of.” Read more from TODAY.
5. Thousands Flee California Wildfires
Hundreds of buildings have been lost to a fast-moving fire in Northern California that broke out on Saturday. Four firefighters have been hospitalized with second-degree burns. Read more in NEWS.
6. Arrests in Phoenix Copycat Attacks
Three teenagers have been arrested over at least a dozen slingshot attacks. But authorities say they are still looking for a suspect in the freeway shootings that have terrorized drivers on Interstate 10 in Arizona. Read more in NEWS.
7. Miss Georgia is Crowned Miss America
There she is: Betty Cantrell, who took the title with an opera performance from “Madame Butterfly.” The pageant was a return for Vanessa Williams, who had to resign the 1984 crown in a scandal over nude photos. She finally got an apology. Read more in NEWS.
