1. Activist Malala shares in Nobel Peace Prize
Seventeen-year-old Malala Yousafzai is the youngest-ever recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize. She famously survived an assassination attempt by the Taliban two years ago and has gone on to champion young women’s education around the world. Yousafzai's efforts earned her the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday — an honor she is sharing with Indian children’s rights advocate Kailash Satyarthi. Read more in NEWS.
2. U.S. Ebola victim didn’t want resuscitation
Thomas Eric Duncan told the Dallas hospital that was treating him that he didn’t want to be resuscitated, officials said Thursday. Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital detailed Duncan's care and death in a statement, saying it hoped to “correct misconceptions” about the much-scrutinized case and victim's treatment. The hospital has come under scrutiny after Duncan was initially released despite saying he was ill and had traveled from Liberia. Read more at NBC Dallas-Ft. Worth.
3. Tensions with police flare after St. Louis shooting
Hundreds of protesters angered by the fatal shooting of a black teen by an off-duty officer faced off with police in riot gear overnight in south St. Louis. The protesters hurled abuse at police, who silently stood their ground. Officers used pepper spray at one point and some protesters burned the American flag after a vigil for 18-year-old Vonderrit Myers. Read more in NEWS.
4. Kim Jong Un a no-show at major event
Is Kim Jong Un ill? The North Korean dictator hasn’t been spotted publicly since Sept. 3, and wasn’t at an anniversary celebration for the founding of the ruling Workers’ Party, according to reports. His notable absence is only fueling rumors that he’s sick or may no longer be in control of the country. Before his disappearance from the public eye, Kim was seen walking with a limp and appeared more overweight than usual. Read more in NEWS.
5. Adrian Peterson could be arrested again: report
The suspended Minnesota Vikings running back could be re-arrested after allegedly telling a courthouse employee that he “smoked a little weed” before providing a urine sample this week. That would be a violation of his bond. Peterson is awaiting trial on a single charge of allegedly abusing his 4-year-old son with a tree branch. 6. ‘SNL’ veteran and actress Jan Hooks dies at 57
Jan Hooks was on the cast of “Saturday Night Live” from 1986 to 1991, and was best known for playing one of the Sweeney Sisters. She also could nail impressions of celebrities and political figures, including Hillary Clinton and Sinead O’Connor. Later in her career, she co-starred on “Designing Women” and made an appearance on “30 Rock.” No details were immediately given about her death. Read more in POP CULTURE.
