By and A pilot was forced to make an emergency landing after falling ill and requesting medical attention.
On Aug. 25, a Delta flight heading from Los Angeles to Boston made a stop in Detroit after the pilot informed air traffic control that they needed to go to the hospital.
“This is the Captain, I’m the one that’s ill. I’m gonna taxi the jet to the gate,” the pilot is heard telling air traffic control in audio obtained by NBC News. “And then I need to go to the hospital.”
Delta Flight 437, which had about 147 passengers, was ultimately delayed after the pilot landed and disembarked at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport.
According to FlightAware, the flight was delayed about an hour and a half. The flight was re-crewed before departing again for Boston.
The flight from Los Angeles to Boston usually takes about five to six hours. Per FlightAware, it arrived an hour and 39 minutes later than scheduled.
In a statement to NBC News, Delta confirmed the delay due to “a crew illness.”
“We apologize to our customers for this disruption in their travels,” the statement added.
The airline did not confirm the pilot’s name or share an update on the pilot’s condition.
