A man is dead after the shooting on the Green Line train at the Navy Yard station, Metro Transit Police said.

A man was dead after a shooting on the Washington, D.C., Metro system Sunday morning, and authorities were searching for the shooter, police said.

The shooting occurred around 11:45 a.m. on a Green Line train at the Navy Yard station, Metro Transit Police tweeted. The station is in the Capitol Riverfront neighborhood less than a quarter-mile from Nationals Park, the home of Washington's Major League Baseball team.

"Unfortunately, despite lifesaving measures, the adult male victim was pronounced deceased at the scene," transit police said in the tweet.

Washington police tweeted that officers were looking for a thin man ages 25 to 27, wearing all black, with curly hair, who had a silver or gray gun. They added that an investigation continued by the station, in the 1100 block of New Jersey Avenue SE.

Assistant Washington Police Chief Andre Wright told reporters Sunday that the shooter and the victim got into an altercation on the train and that the victim suffered “multiple gunshot wounds” to his upper body.

More information about the shooting and the victim was limited. A representative for transit police directed questions to Washington police.

Washington Police Officer Makhetha Watson said investigators from the violent crimes bureau and the homicide unit were on the scene.

Green Line trains were delayed and not stopping at Navy Yard while police investigated, Metro tweeted.
