The latest annual crime statistics paint a striking portrait of New York City as it prepares for its first mayoral transition in 12 years and first new police commissioner in 11. There were just 332 murders in the five boroughs in 2013, down sharply from 419 in 2012 -- a 20 percent drop in a year for America's largest city.
It also comes at a time when the NYPD has drastically reduced its controversial stop-and-frisk tactics. Incoming Mayor Bill de Blasio has vowed to further curtail the enforcement techniques.
Most other crimes are down too, with the notable exception of thefts. Larcey statistics have been on the rise in most cities of late, likely because of the popularity of smartphones and tablets.
