Asian-American Members of Congress Endorse 25-Year-Old House Candidate

Three Asian-American members of the House of Representatives have endorsed 25-year-old Lindy Li in her Pennsylvania congressional bid, Li’s campaign announced Tuesday.

Reps. Grace Meng (D-NY), Mike Honda (D-CA), and Ted Lieu (D-CA) are lending their support to Li as the former Morgan Stanley financial analyst begins collecting the required 1,000 signatures from registered Democrats in Pennsylvania's 6th District to appear on Pennsylvania’s April 26 primary election ballot. Those nominating petitions must be submitted by Feb. 16.

“I am incredibly honored to have the support of these outstanding community leaders and will continue to work hard to build a bottom-up grassroots campaign that addresses the concerns of all citizens in Pennsylvania’s 6th," Li said in a statement.

Honda, a congressman since 2001 who represents Silicon Valley and who is running for reelection in a tight race, told NBC News in a statement that he would welcome Li’s views as a colleague in the House of Representatives.

“Lindy Li is an impressive woman,” he said. “Her personal story and knowledge of the issues facing working families, along with her enthusiasm and work ethic, will serve the people of Pennsylvania’s 6th Congressional District well.”

Li — who, if elected, would become the youngest member of the House — also picked up endorsements from Rep. Robert Brady (D-PA), a number of county and state leaders, and two labor unions, according to her campaign.

Li was originally one of three Democrats challenging three-term Republican incumbent Rep. Patrick Meehan, who represents the 7th District near Philadelphia, one of the nation's most gerrymandered, according to The Washington Post. But earlier this month, at the request of local and state party leadership, the Princeton University graduate moved her campaign to the neighboring 6th District, Li told NBC News in January.

While congressional candidates are not required to live in the districts they represent, Li, who emigrated from China at the age of five, said that her family home is in Malvern, located in the 6th District.

Army veteran and businessman Mike Parrish is the other Democratic candidate running in the 6th District against freshman Republican Rep. Ryan Costello. According to an article in Roll Call last December, Parrish's campaign had "floundered," and Democratic strategists were looking for someone else to challenge Costello in the general election.

According to Federal Election Commission filings, Li had $250,143 in cash on hand at the end of last September; Parrish had $26,445.

In a statement to NBC News in early January, Parrish said he had support from a number of former and current state elected officials, including former Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell. He added that he has the experience necessary to fix a broken Congress.

“Our campaign continues to focus on the need for change in Washington and nothing has happened that changes that,” Parrish said in the statement.
