A strong earthquake shook the southern Japanese island of Kyushu on Sunday. There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.
The magnitude 5.1 temblor was centered six miles below the earth’s surface off the west coast of Kagoshima, about 620 miles southwest of Tokyo.
There was no danger of tsunami, tidal waves caused by seismic activity, Japan’s Meteorological Agency said.
Japan suffered its deadliest quake in a decade two months ago when a magnitude 6.8 temblor rocked the northern Japanese region of Niigata. Forty people were killed and 2,700 were injured.
Japan, which rests atop several tectonic plates, is among the world’s most earthquake-prone countries.
