Drugmaker Eli Lilly and Co. on Wednesday said it will make clinical trial information available online amid calls by lawmakers and physicians for more disclosure of negative trial results.
Lilly said the registry would include results from all Phase I through Phase IV clinical trials of its marketed products.
The Web site also will post information on the start of all Lilly-sponsored Phase II through Phase IV clinical trials.
Editors of major medical journals have called for the publication of all trials, including those at the early Phase I stage.
In a statement, Lilly said its registry would be the most comprehensive effort to date by either a public or private entity.
Drugmakers have been under pressure to disclose results of their testing after New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer required GlaxoSmithKline Plc to publish results of its drug trials in a registry as part of a settlement involving use of its antidepressant Paxil in children.
Spitzer had accused GlaxoSmithKline of fraudulently suppressing important information.
Some members of Congress have considered using the law to force companies to tell more about what they know.
Drugmakers have balked at demands for early disclosure, saying this would force them to share scientific secrets with rivals and reduce their incentive to develop new medicines.
