The British Broadcasting Corp. will cut nearly 3,000 jobs in a drive to reduce costs, the company reported Tuesday.

Most of the cuts will be in administrative departments, and some operations will be moved from London to Manchester, the BBC said on its Web site.

The corporation now employs about 27,600 people.

Mark Thompson, director-general of the BBC, planned to announce details later Tuesday, the company said.

According to The Guardian newspaper, the steps are designed to save 320 million pounds ($620 million), or nearly 10 percent of its annual expenditure.

Gerry Morrissey, assistant general secretary of the broadcasting workers' union BECTU, said the union would call a strike vote if there are any compulsory layoffs.
