Apple Computer Inc. Thursday launched its iTunes online music store in Canada, the 14th country in which the popular service is available.
iTunes, which only works with Apple's market-leading iPod digital music player, is, in addition to the United States, available in France, Germany, England, Spain, Portugal and other countries.
Songs at the Canadian store will cost $0.99 Canadian each. In the United States, songs cost 99 cents each.
"The demand across Canada for the iTunes Music Store has been overwhelming," said Eddy Cue, vice president of applications for Cupertino, California-based Apple.
Apple said that the iTunes music store in Canada has more than 700,000 songs and dozens of exclusive tracks from a variety of worldwide artists.
As in the United States, users of the Canadian iTunes store can play songs on up to five personal computers, burn a single song onto CDs an unlimited number of times, burn the same playlist up to seven times and listen to music on an unlimited number of iPods.
The iPod, which is also resold by No. 2 computer maker Hewlett-Packard Co., works on both Apple's Macintosh computers and those using Microsoft Corp.'s Windows Operating system.
