A car tried several times to ram the limousine carrying Serbia’s pro-Western president Boris Tadic in Belgrade late on Tuesday, his press office said.
Tadic was unharmed, it said.
An official statement said the presidential convoy was driving through the capital when a vehicle “tried to ram Tadic’s car several times, even though the president’s motorcade had special lights and sirens.”
Tadic heads the opposition Democratic Party, for years led by Zoran Djindjic, the prime minister who was shot dead in March 2003 by a sniper outside government headquarters in Belgrade.
Djindjic infuriated nationalists by sending former president Slobodan Milosevic to The Hague war crimes tribunal, where he is now on trial.
Last week, an unknown Serb group calling itself the “Serbian Patriotic Organization” sent a letter to the Serbia Montenegro embassy in Vienna threatening to kill Tadic and Foreign Minister Vuk Draskovic if they showed up in Austria.
Tadic has stepped up pressure on the government of Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica to arrest and extradite war crimes suspects sought by the U.N. war crimes tribunal in The Hague.
He says Kostunica’s inaction was blocking Serbia from getting closer to the European Union.
