Republicans successfully blocked President Obama's nomination of Caitlin Halligan to the D.C. Circuit Court after two filibusters.

The White House withdrew Caitlin Halligan’s nomination to the U.S. Circuit Court on Friday after Republicans filibustered her nomination for a second time. Halligan had been nominated to fill a vacancy in the District of Columbia Circuit Court.

Republicans fought against Halligan because she worked on cases that argued gun manufacturers should be held liable for crimes committed with their products while she was the solicitor general of New York. She was first nominated in 2011. She was also critical of President George W. Bush’s policy on detainees.

Halligan’s nomination the convoluted judicial confirmation process were both topics of discussion on March 9′s Up w/ Chris Hayes.

There are 18 judicial nominees that are currently awaiting confirmation.
