After the misplacement of unencrypted backup data tapes, TD Bank is warning 260,000 customers on the East Coast of the United States that their information may be at risk.

The bank described the event as an isolated incident and said that, to their knowledge, no breach had occurred and that they do not believe the information is being used maliciously.

Potentially compromised information included customers' Social Security numbers, a spokeswoman told the Associated Press, and affected customers may ave the opportunity to enroll in credit monitoring and identity theft protection services  at no charge.

TD Bank has begun an investigation and the police have been notified, the Ottawa Citizen reported.

TD Bank, based in New Jersey and Maine, is a U.S.-based subsidiary of Toronto-Dominion Bank, which is headquartered in Ontario, Canada.
