A man was shot Monday outside a Harvard University dormitory.

The man was struck outside an entrance to Kirkland House, one of a dozen dorms on the university's campus in the Boston suburb of Cambridge. He was hospitalized in stable condition.

Police say it's unclear if he's a student.

A witness told The Harvard Crimson student newspaper the victim appeared to be "college-aged" and was bleeding but conscious.

Kirkland House administrators sent an e-mail to students informing them of the shooting and asking them to cooperate with police and staff.

The university said the shooting appeared to be an "isolated" incident. Kirkland House residents were asked to remain at the undergraduate dormitory but other members of the university community were allowed to resume normal activities.

Police said it's believed the assailant or assailants fled the area.
