Honda response to earning IIHS’s Top Safety Pick ‘Gold’ for the 2006 Civic

We are very pleased that the 2006 Civic has earned IIHS’s Top Safety Pick ‘Gold’ distinction, the only car in its class to do so. Achieving best in class performance in the IIHS frontal, side and rear impact tests truly puts the Civic in a class by itself. All safety features offered on the 2006 Civic are standard equipment, whether a customer opts for the well-equipped entry level Civic DX, a mid-range Civic LX or a fully-loaded Civic EX, they can expect top level occupant and pedestrian protection, consistent with the Honda ‘Safety for Everyone’ commitment.

All new for 2006, this eighth generation Civic is more powerful and more refined than the previous Civic, yet achieves even better fuel economy, 30mpg in the City and 40mpg on the Highway (according to EPA estimates). In creating the 2006 Civic, Honda maintained the goals of creating the most fuel-efficient and the safest Civic to date.

Below is a partial list of key safety features standard on every 2006 Honda Civic:

  • Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE™) body structure for enhanced occupant protection and vehicle-to-vehicle compatibility in a collision.
  • Advanced dual-stage, dual-threshold driver’s and front passenger’s airbags which deploy at two different speeds based on the severity of the collision
  • Driver and front passenger side air bags with front seat passenger size and position sensor
  • Side curtain airbag protection for front and rear outboard passengers
  • 4-channel Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brake Distribution
  • Front seatbelts with load limiters and dual pre-tensioners
  • Active front head restraints

A higher percentage of 2005 model year Honda vehicles earned 5-star driver and front passenger ratings in government NCAP frontal crash tests than any other brand of vehicle – more than 99% of the new Honda cars, SUV’s and minivans purchased in the past year earned 5-star ratings in government frontal crash tests. Additionally, Honda has worked to address compatibility in the 2006 Civic with our ACE body structure. While providing more load paths to disperse crash energy, the ACE structure is also designed to help engage the crash structure of larger vehicles. Honda’s Odyssey Minivan also features the ACE structure, as will all Honda and Acura vehicles as they are redesigned.
