A shoplifting suspect is accused of trying to shoot a police officer at a Walmart in Ohio, as seen in a chilling bodycam video.
On Thursday afternoon, a Canton police officer arrested Shane Newman, 21, and Katerina Jeffrey, 23, on suspicion of shoplifting, Canton police said in a statement.
"While processing the two suspects in the store’s loss prevention office, the male produced a handgun and attempted to shoot the officer, but the weapon did not fire," the statement said.
In the video, the officer asks Newman multiple times whether he has anything on him that the officer should know about, and Newman replies that he has only his phone and a small container, which he hands to the officer.
The officer then pats Newman down but doesn't find anything, so he tells Newman to have a seat.
Newman sits down next to the Jeffrey in the store office.
Minutes later, Newman turns around, pulls out a gun and aims it at the officer. He cocks the gun as a Walmart employee rushes to intervene and disarm him.
The police officer then wrestles Newman to the ground, and no shots are fired.
As Newman pulls out the gun, Jeffrey yells "no" multiple times, adding, "No Shane, please, no."
During Newman's confrontation with the officer, Jeffrey can be heard saying, "Shane, please stop."
Newman was charged with counts, including attempted murder, felonious assault on a police officer, robbery, possession of drugs and having weapons while under disability.
Jeffrey was charged with complicity to commit robbery.
It was not immediately clear where Newman is being detained or whether he has an attorney.
