Three people, including one student, have been injured in a shooting at Oklahoma State University’s main campus in Stillwater early Sunday, police said.
The university’s police department responded to Carreker East, a three-story residential hall on campus, around 3:40 a.m. after victims arriving at off-campus locations reported the incident.
All of the victims were being treated at hospitals in Oklahoma City and Tulsa.
"Based on the investigation thus far, it appears that there was a large off-campus party at the Payne County Expo Center," police said in the update. "When that party ended around 2:30 a.m., a group of individuals came to campus to have an 'after party.'"
The shots were fired outside Carreker East following "a disagreement between individuals," police said. University and Stillwater police officers arrived "within minutes" and secured the scene.
"The suspect is no longer on campus," police said. "As the event happened, all parties left campus."
The OSU student injured in the shooting was taken to Stillwater Medical Center with a gunshot to the abdomen. The student was flown to OU Medical Center in Oklahoma City and is in stable condition, OSU police said Sunday.
The other two victims were also hospitalized. One was flown to OU Medical Center and is in stable condition and the third was treated and left the hospital, OSU police said.
While police said there is no ongoing threat to the campus, as it was an isolated incident, they are asking everyone who does not live in Carreker East to avoid the area and for anyone with information about the incident to get in touch.
The university's police department is investigating with help from Stillwater police and the Payne County Sheriff’s Office, police said. The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation is assisting in processing evidence.
It is the latest incident in a wave of gun violence at universities and schools over the last week.
In Mississippi, a total of 10 people were killed in Leland and Heidelberg and at Alcorn State University and Jackson State University as schools were celebrating homecoming last week.
On Oct. 4, South Carolina State University went into lockdown after one person was killed and two people were injured in two unrelated shootings on the campus.
