Sean "Diddy" Combs' lawyers want the hip-hop mogul to serve his 50-month prison sentence on interstate prostitution charges at a low-security facility in New Jersey that has a drug treatment program, according to a letter to a judge Monday.
In the letter to U.S. District Judge Arun Subramanian, defense lawyer Teny Geragos urged the court to consider placing Combs at Federal Correctional Institution Fort Dix "in order to address drug abuse issues and to maximize family visitation and rehabilitative efforts."
Geragos also noted that the prison, which is about 40 miles from Philadelphia, offers occupational and educational programs. FCI Fort Dix is one of several dozen federal prisons with residential drug treatment programs, according to The Associated Press.
The federal prison, which is on the grounds of Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, has also housed several high-profile inmates, including “Pharma Bro” Martin Shkreli.
Combs was sentenced Friday to four years and two months in prison after a jury convicted him of two counts of transporting former girlfriends for prostitution. He was acquitted of racketeering and sex trafficking charges.
Before his sentencing, he apologized to two former girlfriends, Casandra "Cassie" Ventura and a woman identified under the pseudonym "Jane." Both had accused Combs of physical and sexual abuse.
"My actions were disgusting, shameful and sick," Combs said in court. "I was sick from the drugs. I was out of control. I needed help, and I didn’t get the help."
"I lost all of my businesses and lost my career and destroyed my reputation, and most of all, I lost my self-respect," he continued. "I have been humbled and broken to my core. I hate myself right now. I’ve been stripped down to nothing."
He also addressed Subramanian, telling him: "I can’t change the past, but I can change the future."
