CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — The University of Virginia has effectively banned 10 people who allegedly participated in violence during a torch-lit demonstration by white nationalists last year.

The no-trespass warnings announced Friday were issued to people the university alleges "engaged in conduct that directly threatened the health and safety" of community members.

One of the people now banned from campus is Richard Spencer, a UVA alumnus who helped organize the march on Aug. 11, 2017.

Also banned are four California men charged earlier this month with violently attacking counterprotesters.

Hundreds of white nationalists descended on Charlottesville in part to protaest the planned removal of a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee.

More violence broke out on Aug. 12. A woman was killed when a car plowed into a crowd of peaceful counterprotesters.
