KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia — President Barack Obama said Sunday that the Malaysia's government has been eager for U.S. assistance and forthcoming during the search for the missing Malaysia Airlines jetliner.

Obama said he understands the heartache of relatives who want answers and said there should be transparency in what the investigation has and hasn't turned up.

He said the U.S. will continue to provide assistance.

Obama was speaking at a press conference Sunday with the prime minister of Malaysia after a private meeting.

The Malaysian government has been criticized for mismanaging the search. Relatives of the passengers protested outside the Malaysian Embassy in Beijing in the past week.

The Boeing 777 was carrying 239 people, mostly Chinese.
