The White House has announced that its next top lawyer will be W. Neil Eggleston, a partner at D.C. law firm Kirkland & Ellis and a former associate counsel in the Clinton White House.

Eggleston, an expert in oversight probes, is expected to start in mid-May. He replaces Katheryn Ruemmler, who announced earlier this year that she will be stepping down from the White House counsel post.

"Neil brings extraordinary expertise, credentials, and experience, to our team," President Barack Obama said in a statement. "He has a passion for public service, is renowned for his conscientiousness and foresight, and I look forward to working closely with him in the coming years."

The pick was first reported by the New York Times.
