Starbucks is set to bring its second Roastery — a concept store that the coffee mega-purveyor has so far only offered in Seattle — to Manhattan with a 20,000-square-foot location to open in early 2018.
On Wednesday, Starbucks announced its massive new Roastery will be located in New York City in the heart of the Meatpacking District at 61 Ninth Avenue. The site is currently under development. According to a press release from the company, the outlet is modeled after Starbucks' first Roastery in Seattle, where "every coffee bean is roasted in the facility."
"The Roastery is coffee as theater, encouraging customers to interact with Starbucks roasters and baristas in order to deepen their understanding of the art behind sourcing, roasting and brewing rare coffees," the release said. According to a Starbucks spokesperson, "it's about achieving a closer relationship with our customers, so that's why coffee takes center stage in this Roastery."

The new location is designed by Rafael Viñoly, who also designed the 432 Park Avenue building in New York City. It will be located one block south of the popular Chelsea Market. Upon completion — which is expected by the end of 2017 — 61 Ninth Avenue will be approximately 170,000 square feet and rise nine stories. The new Starbucks Roastery will take up 20,000 square feet of this location, making it the larger of the two Roastery locations.
