Donald Trump and Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts traded insults Monday, with the progressive stalwart labeling Trump a "loser" and Trump dismissing her with a reference to her claims of Native American heritage, which dogged her 2012 Senate campaign.

Earlier Monday, Warren unleashed a series of tweets questioning Trump's business record and repeatedly using the word "loser" to describe him.

Asked at an afternoon press conference in Washington D.C. about Warren's comments, Trump responded by saying "You mean the Indian?"

That remark was a reference to accusations during her 2012 Senate race that Warren exaggerated or fabricated having Native American heritage in order to secure a position at Harvard University.

"The problem with the country right now is [it's] so divided," he added. "People like Elizabeth Warren really have to get their act together because it's going to stay divided."
