A sheriff's deputy was fatally shot and another was injured while serving a warrant in Indiana early Sunday, officials said.
The shooting took place just after midnight in a trailer park in the town of Russiaville, about 60 miles north of Indianapolis, according to the Howard County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputy Carl Koontz underwent surgery immediately after the shooting but died from his wounds, Sgt. John Perrine, an Indiana State Police spokesman, said about noon Sunday.
The injured officer, Sgt. Jordan Buckley, was listed as stable at a hospital Sunday, the sheriff's office statement said.
Koontz and Buckley were able to return fire, and the suspect — who hasn't been identified — was later found dead, officials said. Police officers and deputies managed to get into the trailer to retrieve the two injured men, and for about two hours they tried to reach the suspect, who was still inside, NBC station WTHR reported.
An autopsy will determine whether the gunshot wound was self-inflicted, Howard County Sheriff Steve Rogers told the station.
The warrant the two deputies were serving was for possession of a syringe, according to WTHR.
Buckley is a nine-year veteran. Koontz was a jail guard before he became a full-time deputy in 2013, the station reported; he was married with an 8-month-old son.
"We are heartbroken at the passing of Deputy Koontz," said a tweet on Howard County's account. "His passing is an example of his selflessness and sacrificial service to our community."
Gov. Mike Pence ordered that flags across the state be flown at half-staff in honor of Koontz.
"Deputy Koontz lost his life in the line of duty and his passing reminds us all of the courage and risk that every member of our law enforcement community and their families face every day in the defending our communities," Pence said in a statement.
