A cop in Raleigh, North Carolina, shot and killed an alleged drug suspect Monday after a brief foot chase, police said.
The shooting occurred shortly after noon near the intersection of Bragg Street and East Street, Police Chief Cassandra Deck-Brown said.
"This is a sad day," she said.
Deck-Brown said the chase began with the officer, six-year veteran D.C. Twiddy, 29, trying to detain the suspect, who she said had been wanted for a felony drug charge.
A gun was found near the suspect's body, she said.
The chief did not provide any additional details about the suspect or the circumstances of the shooting.
Dozens of people remained gathered near the scene Monday evening, long after police left. There didn't seem to be any sign of unrest.
The state Bureau of Investigation will oversee the criminal investigation and hand its findings to the Wake County district attorney, she said. The Raleigh Police Department's internal affairs unit will conduct an administrative review.
Deck-Brown also said she planned to file a written report on the shooting to the city manager within five days.
She asked for patience, and for prayers "for the family, for the police department and most of all for our community."
A woman who identified herself as the dead man's mother told local NBC affiliate WRAL that his name was Akiel Denkins and he was 24 years old.
