Users of Samsung's popular Galaxy series of phones got a nice perk Friday: a new streaming music app exclusive to phones of that make. Called "Milk Music," it's free, and better still, there are no ads.
Although the service is billed as new, it actually is more of a shiny coat of paint on the well-known Slacker Radio. But Slacker has ads, and Milk doesn't — and the new look is definitely striking (though not a little reminiscent of iOS 7).
Hundreds of stations, curated by DJs and artists, can be browsed through via a dial-like interface: run your finger around the edge of the colorful central circle and you skim through stations at high speed, but move to the middle of the circle and the channels pass more slowly.
It's slick, but that might not be enough to woo people away from Spotify, Pandora, iTunes Radio and other established streaming options. But the millions who picked up that last few Galaxy S models will definitely want to at least give it a try.
Right now it's limited to Galaxy devices like the Galaxy S and Note series, but Samsung's VP of music, Daren Tsui, told PC World that the company may open the app up to other brands later.
