Two Palestinian attackers were shot Friday in the West Bank while another assailant was shot in Jerusalem, officials said, the latest in a recent wave of violence.

Israeli police said the two "terrorists" armed with knives had arrived at the Tapuch Junction in Nablus by motorcycle and tried to stab border-police officers before being shot. One was killed and the other was wounded, according to police.

The attempted attack came as clashes erupted in the West Bank town of Hebron on what Hamas and Islamic Jihad had billed a "Day of Rage." Local television also showed footage of violent protests in Ramallah.

Eleven Israelis have been killed in attacks by Palestinians since mid-September, while 58 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire over the same period of time, according to The Associated Press.

Shortly after the attempted stabbing Friday morning at the West Bank checkpoint, Israeli police said a knife-wielding man stabbed and injured an American in Jerusalem. The attacker was shot and killed, police added. An Israeli was wounded in the crossfire, according to The Associated Press.

The recent violence - the worst since the 2014 Gaza war - has arisen in part from religious and political tensions over access to the al-Aqsa mosque compound in Jerusalem's walled Old City that is sacred to both Muslims and Jews.

Palestinians are also frustrated by the failure of numerous rounds of peace talks to secure them an independent state in territories, including the West Bank, that Israel captured in 1967. The last phase of negotiations collapsed in 2014.
