A Florida man says a gunman who opened fire at a "ZombiCon" event in Fort Myers Saturday shot over his shoulder and nearly killed his wife standing nearby.

The Cape Coral couple, who would not give their names, said they were there when the shooter unleashed a barrage of gunfire during the event, leaving one man dead and five others wounded. The couple's decision to attend the event was a last-minute one.

"She was dancing in front of me and next thing I know I feel an arm touch my back, and an arm go over my shoulder," and then gunfire erupted, the man told NBC affiliate WBBH in an interview that aired Wednesday.

Police are still looking for the gunman who opened fire at the charity event at around 11:44 p.m. in downtown Fort Myers. The annual event involves participants dressing up as zombies.

"He looked like he didn’t care," the witness told the station. "I’ll never forget the guys face. I’ll never forget that he almost shot my wife," he said.

The witness' wife told the station she was close enough to the gunfire that she felt the heat from the shots on her cheek. "I want him to be arrested so that I can sleep at night knowing that my family is safe," she told the station.

Expavious Tyrell Taylor, 20, was killed in the shooting. Four others were shot and suffered injuries that were not life threatening, police said. A sixth victim was also shot and injured but refused treatment, police said.

Police have released surveillance video and other video they hope helps lead to the shooter. Fort Myers Police Chief Dennis Eads said some of the festival-goers had fake prop firearms, complicating the search for a suspect. The event was expected to draw 20,000 people.

Eads told WBBH Tuesday that the FBI has agreed to assist in the investigation.
