KIEV, Ukraine - Ukrainian opposition factions roamed freely through the capital and surrounded the president's offices Saturday, a day after President Viktor Yanukovych made huge concessions aimed at ending deadly violence shaking the country.

Meanwhile, Ukraine’s embattled president reportedly left the capital for his support base in Ukraine's Russia-leaning East.

"He's not here, none of his officials or anyone linked directly to the administration are here," Ostap Kryvdyk, a protest leader, told Reuters inside the grounds of the administration building.

There were no government forces in evidence in the government district.

One faction of the opposition, the Maidan Self-Defense Units, appeared in control of the presidential administrative building, and were checking reporters' identification before allowing them into the complex.

Standing at the steps of the building, the leader of the group said: "This is clear proof that the situation is under full control."

It was not clear if these units were also protecting the building from more hard-line members of the opposition who earlier vowed to storm the building.

On Friday, Yanukovych signed a deal with Ukraine's main opposition leaders brokered to end the deadly violence that put the country on the brink of civil war.

He agreed to early elections and to surrender some of his powers after 77 people were killed as a geopolitical tug-of-war over whether Ukraine should embrace the West or Russia turned violent this week.

Reuters contributed to this report.
