Pope Francis Names New Crop of Cardinals

LONDON — Pope Francis named 15 new cardinals on Sunday, drawing the new "princes" of the church from more than a dozen countries. The new cardinals hail from a diverse list nations including Ethiopia, Vietnam, Mexico, Tonga, Italy and Myanmar, according to a statement from the Vatican.

Francis said that the new cardinals, "from every continent, manifest the indissoluble links between the Church of Rome and the particular Churches present in the world," according to the statement. The 15 archbishops and bishops will be installed as cardinals at a ceremony on February 14. Francis also said five retired archbishops and bishops "distinguished for their pastoral charity" will be recognized as cardinals, the statement added.
