State Department Deputy Spokesperson Marie Harf urged North Korea to "exercise restraint" and "refrain from any further threatening actions," but said the U.S. had "no specific credible threat information that lends credence" to North Korea's larger threats of attacking the White House or Pentagon.

Speaking at a daily briefing on Monday, Harf also said the U.S. stood by its conclusion that North Korea was responsible for the cyber attack on Sony.

"The government of North Korea has a long history of denying responsibility for destructive and provocative actions," she said.

"If they want to help here, they can admit their culpability and compensate Sony for the damages that they caused," Harf added.

Harf was pressed later about the details of financial compensation and how the sanctioned poor economy of North Korea could pay Sony but did nor provide details.

When asked about reports that the servers used in the attack were Chinese the Deputy Spokesperson stressed, "I know there's an investigation on-going. I don't have any confirmation on those kind of details. I know there's a lot of rumors out there. But again, no information, no evidence that any other government was involved here at this time."

Harf did say Kerry had spoken with his Chinese counterpart over the weekend.
