Malaysia Airlines faces a massive overhaul as the state-backed company struggles to recover from the disappearance of Flight MH 370 and the downing of MH 17 over Ukraine earlier this year. News reports inside the country say an announcement regarding major changes could come as soon as Friday. Khazanah Nasional, the state investment company that owns 69 percent of the air carrier, will likely trim unprofitable routes and cut jobs, analysts told the Associated Press. Travelers on recent long-haul flights have posted photos on social media of nearly empty cabins and departure lounges. The airline says passengers fell 11 percent in July from the year before. In July, Mohshin Aziz, an aviation analyst at Maybank, told CNBC that Malaysia Airlines was already losing about $1.56 million a day, even before MH 17 was downed in Ukraine. Among those in top management positions likely to be ousted in the overhaul is chief executive Ahmad Jauhari, whose contract was set to expire in September.
