President Barack Obama on Thursday praised the U.S. men's soccer team for "defying the odds" and "earning a lot of believers" shortly after the team advanced in the World Cup.

"We were in what’s called the 'Group of Death' and even though we didn't win today, we were in the toughest grouping and we got through," Obama said before a town hall discussion in Minneapolis, Minn. "We still have a chance to win the World Cup."

Team USA fell 1-0 to Germany on Thursday, but still accumulated enough points to advance to the final round of 16 teams.

"They are defying the odds and earning a lot of believers in the process," Obama said.
