- Sean Baker's "Anora," a romantic dramedy about a Brooklyn sex worker who gets hitched to the son of a Russian oligarch, became the big winner of the night, taking home five Oscars, including best picture.
- Actor Morgan Freeman honored the late Gene Hackman, who was found dead last week. The In Memoriam video segment went on to recognize the deaths of other Hollywood luminaries, such as Teri Garr, Donald Sutherland, Shelley Duvall, David Lynch and James Earl Jones.
- Basel Adra and Yuval Abraham, accepting the award for documentary feature film for "No Other Land," called for a political solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
- Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande dazzled the audience with their performance of songs from "The Wizard of Oz," "The Wiz" and "Wicked." Later in the evening, Queen Latifah paid tribute to the late Quincy Jones with a performance of “Ease On Down the Road.”
- Stars brought the glam to the red carpet ahead of the show, which was held at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood and hosted by comedian Conan O'Brien.
Some viewers complain Hulu’s Oscars livestream cut off before final award
Some people who livestreamed tonight's ceremony on Hulu expressed frustration and disappointment online after the stream appeared to end moments before the final awards were announced.
Viewers shared images of their screens, which showed the message: “This live event has now ended"
It was the second time during the show that some viewers said they encountered glitches while using the service, which is owned by Disney, to view the awards show.
This year was the first time the ceremony was simultaneously available to stream while airing live on television.
In response to the earlier glitch, a representative for Disney apologized "for the inconvenience" and said it had "identified the issue and impacted users should be able to log back in soon.” Hulu did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

'Anora' conquered the Oscars
"Emilia Pérez," "Conclave," "The Brutalist" and other acclaimed titles picked up awards throughout the night, but no film was as dominant as "Anora." Five awards is a mighty haul for the little independent movie that could.
"I want to thank the academy for recognizing a truly independent film," the film's screenwriter-editor-director Sean Baker said. "This film was made on the blood, sweat and tears of incredible indie artists. Long live independent film."
The Oscars went over ... as usual
Even though tonight's award ceremony started at 7 p.m. ET, a little earlier than usual, the show still ended later than expected.
The ceremony had been expected to end at around 10:30 p.m. ET but ended almost 20 minutes later.

Mikey Madison gives shoutout to sex workers in her acceptance speech
First-time nominee Mikey Madison has won her first Oscar for starring as Ani in the film "Anora." The win is probably the most prominent upset of the night, as many considered Demi Moore the front-runner going into the ceremony.
In her acceptance speech, Madison honored the sex worker community, which her character, Ani, is part of in the movie.
"I will continue to support and be an ally," Madison said, adding that meeting such workers was one of the highlights of working on the project.

Sean Baker makes a paean to the theatrical experience
In a moment that is likely to thrill cinephiles all over the world, Sean Baker used part of his best director speech to extol the virtues of seeing movies in actual movie theaters.
"We're all here tonight and watching this broadcast because we love movies," Baker said. "Where did we fall in love with the movies? At the movie theater; watching a film in a theater with an audience is an experience: We can laugh together, cry together, scream in fright together, perhaps sit in devastating silence together.
"It's a communal experience you simply don't get at home," he added.
Baker said the industry urgently needs to support the commercial health of brick-and-mortar theaters, especially independent cinemas hit hard by the early years of the pandemic. Baker closed by wishing his mom a happy birthday.

Baker's win in the best director race is yet another sign that "Anora" is heading for a best picture victory — which means Baker could leave the Dolby Theatre with four Oscars. He previously won best original screenplay and best editing.
