GOP Sen. Bill Cassidy has decided not to run for Louisiana governor in 2023, he announced Friday.
Cassidy said in a statement that he has been "working on specific legislation that is critical for the future of our state and country."
"I don’t know if these solutions will pass, but I know they will not pass if I decide to run for another office," Cassidy said. "I have chosen to remain focused on the job I was sent here to do and to see these efforts through."
Cassidy is up for re-election again in 2026, after winning a second term in 2020. He is one of seven Senate Republicans who convicted former President Donald Trump of inciting an insurrection on Jan. 6, 2021, during Trump's second impeachment trial.
While Cassidy is passing on a run for governor, other senators are considering a campaign for governor. Louisiana's other GOP Sen. John Kennedy, is considered a potential candidate for governor. And GOP Sen. Mike Braun is weighing a run for governor of Indiana.
