Dr. Ben Carson continues to be calm about his presidential campaign, despite his new status as republican front-runner in Iowa and target of Donald Trump’s taunts.

In an interview to air on NBC’s “Meet the Press” Sunday, Carson responded to Donald Trump referring to him as “sleeping” and “super low energy” by saying that “it’s fine” if Trump wants to attack him for his campaign style.

“I don't get into the mud pit and I'm not going to be talking about people. I will tell you, in terms of energy, I'm not sure that there's anybody else running who has spent 18 or 20 hours intently operating on somebody,” Carson said.

He continued, “I have plenty of energy. But, you know, I am soft-spoken. I do have a tendency to be relaxed.” The republican candidate readily admits that as a teenager he was very volatile, but that he’s a “very different person now.”

Carson’s appeal to evangelical voters is being credited for his surge in Iowa.

Trump and Carson will be back on stage together Wednesday at the CNBC GOP debate in Colorado.
