Touro Infirmary, a full service community hospital in New Orleans, resumed its entire range of medical service this week.
The first baby born in a New Orleans hospital since Hurricane Katrina followed shortly thereafter with Julia Marie Poche arriving Wednesday to parents Heidi and Stephen Poche.
On Friday, the new mother and father talked with MSNBC's Alex Witt about the delivery and returning home to New Orleans to have their child.
Heidi Poche, who had evacuated to Baton Rouge after the storm, said it was important to her and her husband to have the baby in New Orleans.
"I saw a physician in Baton Rouge who was actually from New Orleans and I kept up with the hospital through their website trying to find out when my doctor was coming back," she said. "She called me over the weekend and said 'I'll be there Monday' which was the tenth and so here we are."
"We had back up plans in Baton Rouge and also with another hospital right outside of New Orleans but we really like our physicians here and the hospital did a great job with our last child born here. I was anxious to get home," added Stephen Poche.
The couple, which also has two other children -- a four year old and a 19-month old -- said naming the child Katrina was never a consideration.
"No one who lives here is asking why we didn't name our child Katrina," Heidi Poche noted. "I wish there was some significance for the name. ... I don't know, it just sounds good with out last name. And she's beautiful. She looks like a Julia."
