Unable to communicate via cell phone or landline with his wife, Lt. Reginald Jacque, a New Orleans police officer, met up with MSNBC's Lisa Daniels on Tuesday and was able to speak with his wife, Patricia, who he had evacuated to Mississippi before Hurricane Katrina hit last week.
Jacque, who was featured last week on MSNBC-TV in a very emotional state during the hectic days following the flooding in New Orleans, said that as the recovery efforts have progressed, the moral has improved in the city.
"We're ok down here, the Guard is helping us out, there's food and water," Jacque told his wife. "Everything is going to be all right."
Jacque, who had to scramble to get many family members out of town, learned that several had evacuated to Houston for the first time on Tuesday.
"People just opened their hearts, and everybody down here thanks everybody, from north, south east and west," he said.
After speaking with Daniels, Jacque was headed to Mississippi for five days of leave to meet up with his wife and family, including son Huckleberry, who is celebrating a birthday.
Patricia Jacque was overcome with emotion at the thought of the reunion.
"I can't wait to see him, I can't wait to hold him and I just want him to be safe in getting here," she said.
