A Bali court on Wednesday gave Schapelle Corby, a convicted Australian drug smuggler, a second chance to call witnesses who her lawyers say could help free her from a 20-year jail sentence.
Witnesses including an Australian police officer and a prisoner serving on drug charges in Australia were unable to attend a Wednesday session on the appeal of the 28-year old former beauty therapist.
One witness, an Indonesian law professor, did appear.
“(The court) will give a last chance to the defense lawyers to bring witnesses which are already mentioned in the list,” chief judge Linton Sirait told the Denpasar District Court, referring to names previously submitted to the court.
The new hearing was scheduled for Aug. 3.
Corby was sentenced to 20 years last April after being found guilty of importing 9 lbs. of marijuana through Bali’s international airport.
Corby’s lawyer, Hotman Paris Hutapea, said they were unable to bring key witnesses due to “matters outside their hands.”
“So we asked permission of another two weeks,” Hutapea told reporters.
